The Chicago Bar Point Club won the 30th Annual Illinois Challenge
Cup
Backgammon tournament. It was their 12th win all time, and the 5th time in
the
last 7 years that they have taken home the title. As usual, it came down
to the last
few matches of the day before the winner was determined. Bill Davis won
his final
round to give them 22 wins, one ahead of Sangamon Valley. The attention
then turned to
the match between Laurel Patkes of Springfield and Dujuan Meekis of the Chicago
BG Association. If Laurel won, it would have forced a tie with 22 wins
each and a playoff
would have been needed. Dujuan left her a shot bearing off, but she
couldn't roll the
five to hit it, and ended up losing a tough match to give the victory to the
BPC.
After five rounds, Sangamon Valley
had a 4 match lead, but the Bar point Club went an
incredible 9-1 in the last two rounds, including 5-0 in the last round, to pull
out the win
which prevented Springfield from repeating as champions. Peoria finished a
close third.
The side pools were all split several ways as no one could go undefeated with a
6-0
record. Milad Doueihi of Peoria had a chance as the only 5-0 player to enter the
last
round, but he was beaten by John Jennings in a tough match. That forced a
four way split
with Randy Armstrong, Jim Zimmerman, and Rory Pascar, who also lost only once.
Congratulations to both Bob Steen and Rory Pascar who got their name on the
cup for the first time.
Tak Morioka won his 13th, along with Bill Davis (6), Howard Markowitz (5), and
Lucky Nelson (3).
